SUMMARY:Cultivating the Future University: Eco-Art\, Healing\, and Pedagogy in the Healing Garden
DESCRIPTION:In this SPARKS Exchange\, artist and educator Lipeng Jin invites you into the story of the “Healing Garden”—an evolving eco-art and pedagogical experiment at the Sichuan Fine Art Institute\, China. More than a campus garden\, the Healing Garden is a living laboratory reimagining the university’s role in an era of ecological crisis: How can higher education become a force for planetary healing and community renewal? \nDrawing inspiration from Thomas Berry’s vision of the University as a bridge to the Universe\, the Healing Garden brings the living world—soil\, water\, plants\, animals\, and people—into the heart of academic life. The project moves beyond symbolic gestures\, engaging students and faculty in hands-on acts of ecological and social repair: composting campus waste into fertile earth\, co-creating mandala gardens and mobile chicken coops\, and transforming kitchens into spaces of communal care and ritual. SUMMARY:Middle Eastern Modal Process & Modulation
DESCRIPTION:This SPARKS Exchange will feature a brief exposition of maqām (Middle Eastern modal) music focusing on Tanburi Cemil Bey’s “Hicazkâr Saz Semai” as a template for appreciation of the unique process of modulation that is prevalent in Middle Eastern music. Abdessamad Mason Zantow will present on the lâvta (Istanbul lute)\, an instrument played by Tanburi Cemil Bey and a cousin of the oud and modern guitar. \nAbdessamad is a core member of Ensemble Shamaali\, a small Wisconsin-based Middle Eastern music ensemble that seeks to bring classical Arabic and Turkish music to audiences in a contemporary and unique manner. SUMMARY:Carasoul: Animating the Imaginal Mind with Kaeti MacNeil
DESCRIPTION:In this SPARKS offering\, artist and animator Kaeti MacNeil will share the story of her award-winning short film Carasoul: a Portrait in Nth Dimensions alongside reflections first shared in her interview for the Novel Becomings blog. Carasoul explores the unseen layers of human experience\, depicting memory\, sensation\, and imagination as tangible forms that extend beyond the body. Blending stop-motion paint and digital animation\, Kaeti visualizes how consciousness takes shape in time\, and how Whitehead’s process-relational ideas resonate through artistic practice. \nFollowing the presentation and interview\, participants will be invited into a creative reflection session. Using Carasoul’s imagery and process philosophy as inspiration\, guests will reflect on a life experience through social presencing theater\, an embodiment practice with a focus on the hands and their gestures.
