Goal Claremont School of Theology and Claremont Graduate University, two of the schools that are located most closely to Asia, have continuously interacted with various religions and philosophies in Asia. The Center for Process Studies has played a pivotal role in making this close interconnection between East and West possible. I must thank all those at the Center whose endeavors have made this bridging between East and West not a mere possibility but a reality. I believe it is not a mere accident that the Center had a crucial role in this close relationship because process thought comes closest to much of Asian philosophy within the Western traditions. The Center for Process Studies has already had two international conferences in Asia: one in China (2002, 4th IPN) and the other in Korea (2004, 5th IPN). In particular, Korea is unique in the sense that the religions of Confucianism, Buddhism, Daoism, Christianity, and even Primitive Spirituality co-exist in a well-balanced ratio: approximately 20% of the population belongs to each religion respectively. In addition to the fact of well-balanced religious diversity, the bedrock of all religions in Korea has formed what is called Han Stream (Korean Wave), and it is being spread rapidly all over the world. In terms of dialogue between Korean heritage and Process thought, it is invaluable that the Center for Process Studies decided to launch the Korea Project Program. This project would allow scholarly, cultural, and social interaction between West and East, contributing to bringing two cultures closer together. |
목적 미국에서 아시아에 가장 근접한 위치에 놓여있는 클레어몬트신학대학원과 클레어몬트대학원 종교학부는 지금까지 지속적으로 아시아에 있는 여러 종교와 철학사상들과 접해왔다. 특히 과정사상연구소는 이러한 동서양의 만남에 중요한 역할을 해 왔다. 우리는 이러한 동서양의 만남을 지금까지 실현시켜온 과정사상연구소의 모든 연구원들에게 감사를 해야한다. 과정사상연구소가 동서양의 깊은 관계속에 중요한 역할을 감당해온 것은 단순한 우연이 아니다. 과정사상은 서구사상의 하나이지만, 동양철학의 사상적 바탕과 매우 비슷한점이 많이 있다. 벌써 과정사상연구소는 두번의 국제컨퍼런스를 중국(2002년 4회)과 한국(2004년 5회)에서 치뤄냈다. 한국은 종교적으로 독특한 문화를 형성하고 있다. 한국은 유교, 불교, 도교, 원불교, 기독교와 다른 원시종교등이 균형잡힌 비율로 공존하고 있는 보기 드문 나라이기 때문이다. 이러한 균형잡힌 종교 다원적인 특성 이외에, 한국의 모든 종교들의 기저에는 “한사상”이 배경으로 자리잡고 있으며, 이 한사상은 빠르게 세계에 알려지고 있다. 과정사상연구소에서 Korea Project의 발족은 한국의 종교문화적 유산과 과정사상의 끊임없는 상호작용과 대화에 필수불가결한 작업이다. Korea Project는 동서양의 학문적, 문화적, 사회적교류를 통해 두 문화를 더 가깝게 만들어 내는데 크게 기여할것이다. |

Future Plans (1) Journal of Korea Project: Korea Project will publish an academic journal, focusing on dialogues between Korean thought and process thought. The tentative title is Process Studies East and West. (2) Colloquium for Student Seminar Group: This colloquium will be held bi-monthly. 앞으로 계획들 (1) Journal of Korea Project: Korea Project는 한사상과 과정사상간의 대화를 중심으로 학문성있는 저널을 출간할 예정이다. 이 저널의 잠정적 이름은Process Studies East and West 이다. (2) 학생 콜로키움: 격월로 학생들의 콜로키움을 통해 과정사상의 학문적 깊이와 폭을 넓히고자 한다. (3) Han and Process Conference:싸우스베일로 한의과 대학이 매년 이 컨퍼런스를 후원할 예정이다. |
Process Thinking Society...In 2008, the Korea Project has begun a study group of process thinking in relation to Korean Christians’ understanding of faith. It founded the “Process Thinking Society” with the aim of revitalizing Christian faith through Process theology. PTS desires to answer questions that address urgent concerns such as world ecosystems, religion and society, and family life in the 21st century for Korean Christians in the midst of the global context.
