In this presentation, David Roy will weave together several strands of knowledge to help explain why it is important that we in the West increase the role of the right hemisphere in our whole brain’s experience of the world. This includes the rich psychological facts and ideas of Iain McGilchrist, Allan Schore, and Darcia Narvaez, among others. The understanding of intersubjectivity is deepened by process metaphysics. (This is a key psychological term.)

Additional relevant concepts from process metaphysics will be integrated with the psychological findings and David will point to some ways to facilitate this increase. Neuroscience research supporting the needed transformation will be included. He will end with an example of an extreme right hemisphere experience (or an extreme causal efficacious experience).

David Roy

David E. Roy graduated from Claremont School of Theology in 1978 with a PhD that included theology, philosophy, and psychotherapy. His dissertation was an integration of Process Philosophy (the modes of perception and the phases of concrescence) with the theory of Gestalt Therapy (self-modes and the stages of Gestalt formation). John Cobb was on the committee. His undergraduate major was in experimental psychology after which he did a year of physiological psychology graduate work. He interrupted his education to spend two years as a newspaper reporter before entering CST in 1969. David spent 45 years as a psychotherapist, including directing the counseling center at LA’s First Congregational Church. He also worked in Michigan before moving to Fresno where he worked as an outpatient psychotherapist until 2022. Since retirement, he has continued his deep interest in bringing together process philosophy and psychology. David lives with six cats whom he adores. He senses the feelings are mutual. His cat named Z likes to sit by his computer as he types and will put his paw on David’s hand.
