How does empowerment emerge? Drawing on her experience facilitating youth and community development programs in Kliptown, Soweto, South Africa, Natasha Yen explores how empowerment and transformation unfold in practice.
Through a youth leadership program and a community workshop series, Natasha observed how confidence, agency, and leadership developed as participants took initiative, made decisions, and brought their ideas into action. Rather than treating empowerment as a predefined outcome, the presentation explores how it unfolds over time, and how community change becomes possible when people are equipped not only with skills, but also with the belief and capacity to shape their own futures.

Natasha Yen
Natasha Yen is passionate about youth empowerment, community-led development, and educational approaches that cultivate confidence, agency, and leadership. Following her graduation from Pitzer College in 2025 with a degree in Sociology, she spent eight months as a Napier Fellow at the Little Rose Center in Kliptown, Soweto, South Africa. Her work explores how learning, participation, and community engagement contribute to meaningful social change.
