In Earth on Fire: Brewing Plagues and Climate Chaos in Our Backyards, scholar and author Evaggelos Vallianatos makes the case that industrial animal agriculture lies at the heart of two of the most urgent crises of our time: pandemic disease and climate chaos.

In this session of Process Explorations, Evaggelos will present the ideas from his latest work, drawing on the agricultural traditions of ancient Greece and China’s ecological civilization debates to trace a through-line from humanity’s earliest relationships with land and animals to the conditions that gave rise to COVID-19 and the broader era of global industrial farming dependent on pesticides, petroleum, and heavy machinery. He will also interrogate the science and politics behind pandemic origins while placing fossil fuel-driven climate change squarely in the same frame, arguing that these are not separate catastrophes but deeply intertwined consequences of how modern civilization has chosen to feed itself. Discussants Jay McDaniel and Marcus Ford will offer their own latest thinking on climate change and will engage in a three-way dialogue with Evaggelos and the other attendees.

Jay McDaniel

Jay McDaniel

Jay McDaniel is a philosopher and theologian known for his work in process theology and open and relational thought. Influenced by Alfred North Whitehead, his writing explores the relational nature of reality, the role of creativity in the universe, and the spiritual significance of everyday life. He has long been associated with the Center for Process Studies and with Open Horizons, where he helps develop resources that connect philosophy, spirituality, ecology, and the arts. McDaniel writes for both academic and general audiences, often drawing on literature, music, theater, and nature to illuminate philosophical ideas. His work emphasizes compassion, imaginative freedom, and the possibility of cooperative and sustainable communities. A teacher, essayist, and musician, he is especially interested in how process philosophy can enrich religious life, interfaith dialogue, and public culture. Through essays, courses, and collaborative projects, he seeks to make complex philosophical ideas accessible and practically meaningful for contemporary life.
