We live in a time of need, where people throughout the world seek visions of hope. This discussion explores the shared vision of Teilhard de Chardin and Alfred North Whitehead, both of whom see the universe as an evolutionary process with inwardness or subjectivity present from the very beginning. Teilhard emphasizes a cosmic pull toward the Omega Point, where love becomes all-encompassing, and describes the emergence of the noosphere—a sphere of collective human thought and consciousness—as a critical phase in this evolution. Whitehead, similarly, envisions a divine lure guiding all actual entities toward richer experiences and individuation, suggesting that love and creativity are not incidental to the cosmos but intrinsic to its unfolding.
Ernie Tamminga and Jay McDaniel will explore ways in which the two perspectives can be combined to form a meaningful, scientifically informed, and spiritually rich vision for human beings at this critical stage in history.
Featuring

Ernie Tamminga
Ernie Tamminga has been reflecting on Teilhard’s vision for over 50 years. He earned his PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where for five years he was a member of Raimon Panikkar’s graduate seminar in Cross-Cultural Religious Anthropology. His dissertation was an analysis and critique of Teilhard’s notion of a “privileged axis” of evolution. Ernie is a trained Spiritual Director, and for 20 years was a member of the board and teaching faculty of Stillpoint: The Center for Christian Spirituality. A Long Time Ago, he was a board member of “The Phenomenon of Man Project,” a nonprofit that offered retreats and presentations centered on the vision of Teilard de Chardin. He describes himself as a “planet empath.” He and his wife have, between them, 12 grandchildren, a fact that intensifies his sense of urgency about what we are doing to our beloved planet.

Jay McDaniel
Jay McDaniel is a philosopher and theologian known for his work in process theology and open and relational thought. Influenced by Alfred North Whitehead, his writing explores the relational nature of reality, the role of creativity in the universe, and the spiritual significance of everyday life. He has long been associated with the Center for Process Studies and with Open Horizons, where he helps develop resources that connect philosophy, spirituality, ecology, and the arts. McDaniel writes for both academic and general audiences, often drawing on literature, music, theater, and nature to illuminate philosophical ideas. His work emphasizes compassion, imaginative freedom, and the possibility of cooperative and sustainable communities. A teacher, essayist, and musician, he is especially interested in how process philosophy can enrich religious life, interfaith dialogue, and public culture. Through essays, courses, and collaborative projects, he seeks to make complex philosophical ideas accessible and practically meaningful for contemporary life.
